Team Growth: Get to Know Nathan and Thomas

At CampusGroups (CG) our team is our biggest strength. We believe in the importance of bringing people together to activate our collective potential. Our outlook is global, with teams in the US, Canada, France, the Middle East, and India.

We trust in the strength that a diverse team brings. This vision is reflected in how we:

  • Develop our product.

  • Work with clients.

  • Build our team.

Our belief is that by embracing diversity, we can foster a better world for our team, partner campuses and students. In this endeavor, we are consistently growing as a company. In 2021 we welcomed 17 unique professionals to the CG team.

This post introduces our cyber security engineer Thomas Berger and Sales Account Executive Nathan Renner. Below, Thomas and Nathan tell us about their professional background, what brought them to CG, and what makes them tick.

Thomas Berger

Thomas is our cyber security engineer. France-based, he graduated from leading engineering school Centrale Marseille.

In addition to being passionate about cyber security, Thomas is, like many of our team members, a foodie. An avid traveler, he has even curated a list of restaurants he loves around the world. Thomas may also have the biggest collection of board games I have ever seen (any Terraforming Mars fans out there?).

Nathan Renner

Nathan is our Sales Account Executive. Texas-based, he is a University of Texas at Dallas alum.

Nathan loves working with clients to understand their goals and find customized solutions to deliver results. The proud father of three children, he is also a wonderful and caring father.

Nathan is also very into board games and a keen numismatist. To find out what that means, and learn a cool fact about pennies, please read his answer to question number two below!

  1. Tell us about your professional background. What does your unique experience bring to the team and company?

    Thomas:

I was a cybersecurity consultant with a large French company for six years before joining CampusGroups. In this role, I worked with several companies on specific security topics. Now it’s the reverse, I work on all things that have to do with cybersecurity for one single company, CampusGroups!

    Nathan:

I’ve spent most of my career with SaaS startups in the EdTech space. My primary focus has been enabling schools to track critical data, key performance indicators (KPI’s), and other components that measure success.

For me it’s about building a relationship and establishing trust. To this end, I use my 10 years of experience to consult with potential clients and ensure that they make the most informed decision possible. My objective is always the client’s success and value realization through the technology solutions I represent.

  2. Tell us a fun and surprising fact about yourself!

    Thomas:

Like many of my colleagues I come from a diverse background. My mother is from Madagascar and my father is Canadian. I grew up in France and am currently based out of the Loire valley.

    Nathan:

I am an avid coin collector and have pieces from the US dating all the way back to the 1790’s. People who collect coins and are interested in their historical and collector value are called numismatists.

Did you know that pennies from 1793 – 1837 were made 100% of copper, while the penny today contains only 2.5%? It’s true, the pennies in production today are made primarily of Zinc.

  3. What made you decide to join CampusGroups?

    Thomas:

I was excited about the opportunity to work with a small company with a big and important objective: helping students make the most out of their time on campus.

    Nathan:

I was recruited by the one and only Andrea Palmer and I have never looked back. We have such a great and diverse team here at CG, that I am constantly learning and inspired each day.

  4. What is it in this new adventure that drives/excites you?

    Thomas:

I love that I get to deal securely with all new things the tech team encounters, including new cloud features and new features on the platform. I also enjoy my role in helping our team members, company and clients make the right choices from a cyber security perspective.

    Nathan:

I’m most excited about our growth and continued progress as a company. I look forward to future developments as we navigate this landscape together.

  5. What is the app or software you can’t live without?

    Thomas:

Any “night light” feature that reduces blue light output on the displays I use (laptop, desktop, phone, etc.) This is especially important for me during the winter months, as it helps reduce eye strain in the evening, and helps me get to bed earlier.

    Nathan:

I am big into financial software like Robinhood, Ameritrade, Venmo, Paypal, and certain social sites like Reddit. For entertainment I mainly stream off sites like Netflix, Prime Video, HBOMax and Funimation. Tik Tok is becoming a thing, but it hasn’t really gotten to me yet.

  6. What do you like to do outside of work?

    Thomas:

I have a lot of varied interests. I love skiing, playing the piano, building LEGO sets, playing video games or board games with friends.

    Nathan:

When I’m not knee-deep in diapers and bottles, I like to collect coins, cards, and pop-culture memorabilia. I also love reading and am currently finishing Dante’s Inferno (from the Divine Comedy Trilogy.) Cooking is another one of my favorite past times so you can catch me in the kitchen with my apron on if you were to drop by.

We are grateful for the expertise, hard work and positive attitudes that Thomas and Nathan bring to our team. In the coming weeks we will be introducing more of our wonderful and unique colleagues. Please stay tuned.
