In 2021, we welcomed 17 unique professionals to the CampusGroups team. This growth continued in 2022. In fact, it has accelerated since we joined forces with the leading mobile-first student engagement platform in higher education- Ready Education (Ready).

This post introduces Maddy Hauck and Louis Cameron. Maddy and Louis tell us about their professional background, what brought them to CampusGroups, and what makes them tick.

Maddy Hauck

Based out of Columbus, Ohio, Maddy joined CampusGroups as a Campus Success Consultant. She holds a Master of Education from Ohio University and a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from Kent State University.

With over seven years of customer service and higher education experience, Maddy is passionate about student success in higher-ed.

Outside of work, Maddy loves to cook for her friends, especially Italian cuisine. Like several other team members, she is also a talented singer. Once upon a time she was even part of a Pop Band!

Louis Cameron

Louis joined CampusGroups as an Implementation and Training Specialist. Based out of Jersey City, New Jersey he holds a Master of Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of Connecticut. Louis also received a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from East Carolina University.

Louis is passionate about higher-ed and student affairs. He has over ten years working in this space and has worked at two college campuses. Louis served as Assistant Director of Training, Programming and Education at Mercy College, where he also held the role of Student Life and Assessment Specialist. Previously, he also served as Resident Director at Boston College.

Outside of work, Louis doesn’t just love but is obsessed with traveling. In 2010 he started a tradition of traveling abroad at least once a year. Despite the pandemic, he has been to 12 countries in 12 years!

Tell us about your professional background. What does your unique experience bring to the team and company?
MADDY:
At CampusGroups I rely heavily on my strengths in ideation, strategic thinking, and communication. My goal is to reach students in meaningful ways and cultivate excitement around pursuing a college degree.
Throughout my time in higher education, I supported students through the learning lifecycle, from the college exploration process through to graduation. This included: enrollment management, first-year experience, advising, residence life, career exploration, and leadership development.
Working with students has provided me with insight into the changing perception of higher education. Students are learning, developing, and changing differently than before. This has driven me to find creative solutions to enhance the college experience. Not just for students, but also for campuses, and community partners.
LOUIS:
My professional background is rooted in higher education and student affairs. What’s unique about my experience is that I know exactly what it is like to work as an entry-level and mid-level campus college staff member. This makes me empathetic to that experience and I can infuse this into my current implementation and customer training role.
In 2010, as an undergrad, I started working as an Orientation Assistant. My excitement for orientation led me to learn about student affairs. I then pursued more opportunities in student involvement and leadership, becoming part of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP).
While obtaining my Master's in Higher Education and Student Affairs, I worked with several student affairs programs. These included the Center for Students with Disabilities, the Office of Community Standards, the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes, and the Office of Residential Life. I also served as a Teaching Assistant for our program’s Law, Ethics, and Decision-Making in Higher Education course.
Post-grad school and prior to joining CampusGroups, I worked at two college campuses—Mercy College and Boston College—where I held different and diverse roles.
Tell us a fun and surprising fact about yourself!
MADDY:
Once upon a time I was contracted to sing in a Pop Band! However, now that hobby is strictly reserved for long road trips.
LOUIS:
I’m obsessed with traveling. Every year since 2010, I have traveled out of the country at least once a year. The pandemic messed up my tradition in 2020. However, in 2021, I made up for it by going to 4 countries, so I like to think that 2020 never happened! To add more on to this–I keep a note in my phone to track all the countries I’ve been to and when I went. I really love traveling!
What made you decide to join CampusGroups (CG)?
MADDY:
CampusGroups provides an opportunity for institutions to cultivate a supportive environment. It helps students connect with their communities.
I wanted to continue to contribute to supporting such a transformative time in students’ lives. Helping administrators and student leaders at our Campus Partners make the most of the tools our platform provides is how I do this.
LOUIS:
I decided to join CampusGroups because I wanted to do something different while effectively using my skill set, knowledge, and experience.
Seeing CampusGroups and the amazing and powerful product the team created to drive campus community engagement was extraordinary. I loved taking the opportunity to step outside of my functional area while maintaining my passion for higher education and student affairs.
What is it in this new adventure that drives/excites you?
MADDY:
I am most excited about learning and sharing new ideas and getting creative! I enjoy learning all the unique ways our campuses use the product. I also love sharing the different ways they can leverage the platform’s numerous features.
LOUIS:
What excites and drives me the most about this new adventure here at CampusGroups is that I LOVE TRAINING PEOPLE! In the past, I’ve been involved in training and educating undergraduate students, graduate paraprofessionals, and full-time professional staff.
Now I work with so many different employees at campuses and organizations. Training them on how to use our product and leverage the platform to their advantage is amazing.
What is the app or software you can’t live without?
MADDY:
So silly, but Spotify…and Instagram, because I like to know what people are up to.
LOUIS:
I want to say Messages, but I feel like that’s a cop-out since it is automatically part of the iPhone. So, I’ll say Instagram and Google Maps.
IG is SUCH an integral part of my life. I use it to find cool new products to buy, for news and current events, sharing educational resources, and watching funny videos. I also use it to keep in touch with friends and follow their lives, and so much more!
I love Google Maps because I am CONSTANTLY traveling and it comes in handy, especially when I’m in a big city walking and using public transportation.
What do you like to do outside of work?
MADDY:
I enjoy cooking and socializing over a meal. You’ll find me in the cookbook section of a bookstore, excitedly flipping through pages. I love finding something new to try and to share with friends. Italian cuisine is my favorite!
You can also find me walking moderately easy hiking trails and exploring places around Ohio. I love a good day trip, but I also love to travel outside my state. Where should I go next?
LOUIS:
Other than traveling, I love the two B’s of New York City: brunch and Broadway! If you don’t know, brunch is a big part of NYC culture and I'm always trying to link up with friends and explore a new brunch spot in the city. My number one recommendation would be Maya on the Upper East Side.
I also love Broadway shows! Once On This Island is my favorite show. I saw the revival on Broadway 16 times and saw our colleague Anthony Pires Jr. in the musical in Boston last year!
Other favorites of mine are Choir Boy, Tina the Musical, Take Me Out, American Son, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, The Prom, and Hadestown.
What steps have you taken at your current (or last) employer to create an inclusive work or learning environment?
MADDY:
I always try to meet people where they are and celebrate who they are. Everyone deserves respect and to feel like they belong. I like to provide opportunities in our working environment for people to share their ideas openly and honestly.
I think it’s important to also practice this outside of work and get to know colleagues as individuals. I love to support and share excitement for my colleague’s personal accomplishments and interests. This can also mean staying informed about what is happening in communities outside of your own to better understand how current events impact people’s ability to be present.
LOUIS:
At my previous employer, I served as one of three co-chairs on a Division of Student Affairs Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Taskforce. We were responsible for creating opportunities to learn, engage, and discuss topics regarding diversity, inclusion, equity, oppression, and social justice.
We created and facilitated presentations on what it means to be an ally, understanding identities and privileges, examining power structures, Black Lives Matter, etc. We also led the Division leadership team through conversations and reflections on the book “So You Want to Talk About Race?” by Ijeoma Oluo. All of this was done to create a more inclusive work and learning environment for students and staff.

We are grateful for the expertise, hard work and positive attitudes that Maddy and Louis bring to our team.
